A path that represents the masterful fusion of nature and history, trekking and culture. Noto Antica, a city of Greek foundation immersed in a beautiful naturalistic area made up of canyons and lakes.
The tour begins with a visit to the suggestive Ancient Noto which has the charm of an abandoned city, where the city walls, access gates, castles and towers, houses are still visible humble and palaces, monasteries and churches, caves, tombs, Hellenistic sacred areas, all built in the white limestone of the Iblei.
There flourishing vegetation and three centuries of neglect make the site as fairytale. It was inhabited from prehistoric times until the fateful earthquake of 1693. After the terrible earthquake that destroyed the south-east part of Sicily, the ancient Noto was abandoned and rebuilt on the site where it is today.
Surrounded by its ancient walls on a rocky spur called Monte Alveria, Noto Antica has preserved its charm and its beauty.
The route continues downhill, towards the Cava canyon del carosello, where among the lakes and streams, we will visit ancient caves transformed into rock tanneries and mills. The splendid quarry, where flows one of the most important rivers of south-eastern Sicily, the Asinaro, fed by perennial springs, still retains more than 50 ancient rock tanneries active since 1400, as well as a casket of exceptional biodiversity.
